Building for the day the internet goes quiet

Most homelabs assume the internet is always there. Mine is built on the opposite assumption.

  • Two ways out. Gigabit fiber is primary; a 5G link takes over when it drops.
  • Search that runs locally. YaCy keeps a private index of roughly 300 GB on local disk, and SearXNG queries it first.
  • Mirrors of what matters. Offline copies of the reference sites I’d actually need, readable with no connection at all.
  • Backups on separate hardware. Proxmox Backup Server lives in a different box from the storage it protects.

Next on the list: an offsite rotation, because a backup in the same room as the fire isn’t much of a backup.
